Pitchforks...

...French style:

Thousands of workers took part in a nationwide strike protesting the government's response to the economic crisis in France on Thursday, disrupting public transit, postal services and hospitals. Angry workers demanded that French President Nicolas Sarkozy do more to fight the crisis.

Unions from the public and private sector urged employees to join the more than 200 protest marches planned nationwide. The demonstrations spanned the country and created widespread public transit disruptions that saw many commuters in Paris stay home.

About one-third of medium-haul flights were affected at Orly, Paris's second airport.

Meanwhile, energy workers cut off 10,000 megawatts of electricity production overnight leading into the protests. The strike is also expected to cut refining output and block Marseille's oil port.

Protesters followed two routes through Paris beginning in the early afternoon. Police estimated about 85,000 people were marching in the capital. Union officials said they expected more than one million people to participate in the protests.

A strike in late January put between one million and 2.5 million people on French streets. Weeks later, Sarkozy announced measures to help people affected by the financial crisis, including special bonuses for the needy. Union leaders want further talks on more measures to help those in distress as a result of the crisis.

I think we're missing something on this side of the pond, don't you?
